He Understood

Devin D. Streeter · October 6, 2026

He understood That he had to go back to a place A Place in his mind where he felt Safe He had to go back to his Happy Place Because he knew If he put all of his happiness in one person In due time it meant he would lose A chance to become a better version Version of himself ; like what’s a man suppose to do When loving you ; meant giving you the chance to be the one hurting Hurting him down to his insides And they say it’s his ego & his pride But what has he been taught his whole life Men aren’t supposed to cry And see they wonder why He avoids those four letters “L.O.V.E” Oooh I remember When I wrote my first love letter Like I never felt nothing better Better than pouring my heart into someone Like really if she’s the one Why not be vulnerable Why not give her all of you But see it’s That fear of someone playing you That fear of someone betraying you That will have you feeling like you Like you’re better off on your own Like no one’s worthy of your throne He understood That he had to go back to a place A Place in his mind where he felt Safe He had to go back to his Happy Place As a man he was never taught about the work The work needed to be done mentally He thought running away from the hurt And dealing with feelings internally Was the best way to start putting him first But he had to come back to reality To realize he was making it worse Like it’s ok to say “I’m Not Okay “ Traumatized from his childhood because That’s when he first started convincing himself he was okay Like even back then he knew he was loved Thankful to his mother & grandmothers because They taught him how to pray & keep the faith So learning who he’s become & who he was Helped him find power in the hurt, the pain , & the love He understood That he had to go back to a place A Place in his mind where he felt Safe He had to go back to his Happy Place No longer letting his past destroy his future Found love , power , & safety in himself So he’s able to love , protect , & empower her Running away from love was never good for his health The gifts , the dates , the random passion & love wasn’t just for her Giving love was how he spoke ; When he couldn’t find the words See, “I” never came as easy ; Cause his heart kept saying “us” And he spoke that love language More fluently than his first ~ Devin D Streeter ~ devinstreeter.org
